Accurate tuning

How to use the online guitar tuner

Allow microphone access, play one string at a time and let the note settle before adjusting the tuning key. Mute the other strings with your picking hand so sympathetic vibration does not confuse the pitch reading.

Standard guitar tuning

From the thickest to the thinnest string, tune to E2 – A2 – D3 – G3 – B3 – E4. Approach the target pitch gradually and finish by tuning upward when possible, which helps reduce slack around the tuning post.

How pitch detection works

The tuner measures the repeating frequency of the sound and compares it with the nearest musical note. A stable, clean attack gives a more reliable result than a very hard pick, heavy distortion or background noise.

How to get a more accurate result

Use the neck pickup, lower the room noise, play near the middle of the string and check the tuning again after all six strings are adjusted. New strings may need several passes while they stretch.

Drop D tuning

Keep A, D, G, B and high E unchanged, then lower the sixth string from E2 to D2. Follow the exact steps in How to Tune a Guitar to Drop D.

After tuning, open the online metronome for timing practice or read the complete online guitar tuning guide.
